Every year, 1 to 5 people from more than 60,000 members are elected to recognize their outstanding achievements in scientific research, outstanding scientific leadership and social influence. It brings together the world’s top forces and form an international first-class scientific research team to meet the challenges and problems facing all human beings. Previous winners include Dr. Ghassem Asrar, who is former Chairman of the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) and Chief Scientist of the Earth Observation Program of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA), Professor Robert Duce, who is former Chairman of Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research(SCOR) and academician of American Academy of Sciences, and Professor Susan Lozier of Duke University, who is the next Chairman of the AGU and other outstanding scientists with global influence. Scientist who is awarded the AGU Ambassador will also be awarded the AGU Fellow. AGU elects about 60 members from its existing membership to award them AGU Fellow each year, with an election rate of 0.1%.

This year, 2019, coincides with the 100th anniversary of the founding of AGU. Academician Wu Lixin won the award this year and became one of the AGU Fellow, which highlights the growing influence and leadership of Chinese marine scientists in the international arena, and will play an important role in building a global collaborative innovation network and a community of shared future for mankind in marine field.
