Release date: 2019-04-10

On the afternoon of December 6, the 1st Future Marine Forum: Face to Face with Academicians was held at the academic salon on the 10th floor of the Institute for Advanced Ocean Study(IAOS), Ocean University of China(OUC). This forum is one of the academic activities held by IAOS. Su Jilan, the famous physical marine scientist and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was invited as a guest to share his academic and life experience with over 30 attendees including teachers and students. Associated professor Zhang Zhengguang from the Key Laboratory of Physics and Oceanography, Ministry of Education, was specially invited to preside over the forum.

Thisactivity was organized in the form of a tea party, and everyone enjoyed the relaxed and pleasant atmosphere. In more than an hour of communication, academician Su Jilan's humorous speech often made the attendees burst into laughter. When asked about how young people in their twenties should spend their youth, Su said thatthere was no need to worry about too much. “It is important to maintain a good attitude and try our best to do what we can do.” As to how to cope with the depression that many postgraduate students may suffer in scientific research, academician Su said that young people should take a positive attitude towards life as well as scientific research. “How to adjust the mental attitude? You might as well put aside your scientific research for a while and do something else instead to distract your attention. When you come back and restart your scientific research, you will be suddenly enlightened. Life is full of setbacks, so you should never give up easily.” As to how young people decide when faced with choices, Su gave some advice. “Think twice before you make a decision and make a plan B before carrying out your decision. Once you decide, keep moving; once you give up, never regret.” When a young teacher asked Su how to balance domestic life and scientific research, he said that there was no conflict between scientific research and domestic life. “It is the joy of life not the sense of responsibility that makes you live. Doing scientific research is not only for making a living but also for fun. It is important to enjoy your life and scientific research and maintain a good state of mind.”

Academician Su has a strong sense of patriotism, and he knew that the destiny of the country and the destiny of the individual are closely linked when he was a child. Only when the world becomes better, the country becomes stronger can the individual has more and better opportunities for development. Academician Su encouraged everyone to devote themselves to marine environmental protection, marine management and other marine disciplines, and make great efforts to develop China’s marine undertaking so as to strive for discourse power in the world. As Chairman of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations, Su shared his original intention: data sharing is important. Only when we achieve more data sharing and more communication can we have a better understanding of the ocean. Moreover, it is also a national responsibility and honor.

At the end of the activity, academician Su sent his best wishes to the young people. “The world is realistic, so you have to accept it. Living in the favorable natural and social environment, we should enjoy our life and work happily.”
